Listen → absorb → transform → create → share.
To learn how to listen differently and transform everyday sounds into a musical composition:
Two sessions to explore, record, and compose, followed by a joint public performance at the Alcazar Library.
Participation in both workshops and the performance is recommended for a comprehensive learning experience.
Designed as a journey of discovery and experimentation, these workshops offer a sensitive and accessible approach to listening and sound creation, for ages 15 and up.
Led by Pauline Wable, the mindful listening workshops offer a sensory exploration of the library’s soundscapes.
First session:
This session is dedicated to a sonic exploration of the library. Using specialized microphones, participants are invited to pay close attention to the sounds of the space, its architecture, its materials, and the sometimes imperceptible vibrations that pass through it.
Second session:
This session offers an introduction to digital sound composition using recordings made collaboratively. Participants will learn the basics of sound creation and editing using software.
The goal: To raise participants’ awareness of listening, not only as an artistic tool, but as a sensitive, creative, and civic skill.
Attentive listening helps us develop a more nuanced relationship with our environment, as well as with ourselves and others. The idea is to make us more aware, more engaged, and more responsible toward the communities we live in.
The program draws in particular on the research of composers R. Murray Schafer and Pauline Oliveros, as well as on contemporary approaches to sound ecology, in order to offer hands-on experiences that are accessible to a teenage audience.
These workshops will culminate in a public presentation on Friday, June 19, at 6:00 p.m. at the Alcazar Library.

Pauline Wable
Sound artist and performer
Pauline Wable has developed an artistic practice centered on celebrating life through attentive listening. Her work revolves around the concept of ritual, which she views as a way to forge connections: connections to oneself, to others, to a place, and more broadly to all living things.
For her, ritual constitutes a moment of suspended time, a moment when we slow down, when we open ourselves to our surroundings, and when we can sensually experience the fact that we are an integral part of nature, with no separation between humans and their environment.
In practice, she designs sound ceremonies in natural settings, often centered around a tree.
She uses piezo microphones that capture surface vibrations, thereby transforming invisible phenomena into sound. These vibrations are composed and blended live with instruments and electronic textures.
The audience, caught up in a collective trance, is invited to interact with the tree, the materials, and the space, becoming fully immersed in the experience.
Through this approach, Pauline seeks to foster a sensory rediscovery of our environment by questioning the role of attentive listening: how listening differently can transform our relationship to the world, to living things, and to others.
