For several years, David Merlo has been investigating the sound possibilities offered by the electric bass. He considers it as a musician, as a composer or as an acoustic sculptor.
With Phase, he synthesizes his research by placing a bass at the heart of a sound and light device.
In its installation component, the object made iconic becomes the receptacle of the resonances that surround it and then transmits and transmutes them through sound and light, through a digital interface.
In his performative version, he engages with this interface in a gestural, sonic and luminous dialogue to push the vibratory potential of his bass and the device in which it is immersed to its ultimate limits.
Phase transposes to multimedia creation a dynamic model based on the collaboration, through their feedback, of self-organized phenomena and programmatic logics.
In its strangely organic way, the device reveals itself as a manifestation of the living, cultivating its capacity to tune and regulate its internal rhythms to its different conditions of development, but also its faculty to provoke ruptures and shifts in the coordination of its cycles to adapt and redefine itself.

Artist musician
David Merlo develops his practice as a sound sculptor by crossing hybrid fields of creation. On the lookout for organic disturbances, he scrutinizes the phenomena of body vibrations and offers the audience a multiplicity of perceptive approaches.
His collaborations in the fields of live performance, cinema and contemporary arts have fed and broadened his collection of materials, allowing him to distance himself from exclusively musical preoccupations in favor of a direct encounter with acoustic matter and its organicity.
A graduate of Pro Musica (Avignon) in contemporary music and of the CRR of Marseille in composition (1st prize), he has presented his personal and collaborative works in festivals such as Reevox, Nuit d'Hiver or RIAM in Marseille, Musique Action in Vandœuvre les Nancy, Séquence Danse-Paris, Question de danse and Dansem-Marseille; in places such as the Kyoto ArtCenter, Super Deluxe-Tokyo, Kunsthaus Rhenania-Koln, Le Fresnoy-Tourcoing; and programs such as Tapage Nocturne, Des Aventures Sonores on France Musique, Les oreilles libres on Radio Libertaire.
