January 17-23, 2022:

During this first creative residency, Julie Rousse will work on the preparation of the sounds that will be diffused in the installation: water matter, biophony and anthropophony, specific sound events, spheres of the inaudible domain and interviews... These recordings, made throughout the year along the Rhone, will be classified and indexed in the sound library of the installation.

February 21 - March 4, 2022:

The aim of this residency, based around the Métamorphoses installation project, is to create the computer architecture of the installation's broadcasting system. DATA or real-time data processing, modeling of digital sound transformations, spatialization, listening experimentation and dialogue between different acoustic spaces.

Métamorphoses is a digital work diffused in the form of a sound installation - a composition for thirty-two loudspeakers and four subs with real time data impulse.

It invites listeners to immerse themselves in the sounds of the river, to feel part and parcel of this vast and complex biotope - an association of varied ecosystems - and to become its listener, witnessing its immensity and diversity from the inside out. Following in the footsteps of Whanganui, the New Zealand river that has been granted the status of a living entity, the fruit of over 100 years of struggle to achieve this, and inspired by this thought, intrinsic to Maori culture: "I am the river and the river is me", the Métamorphoses - Une Voix travers le Rhône project promotes the need to listen as part of a global ecological awareness. The river, considered as a living entity, is present in the form of a multitude of complex, organically intertwined sounds, whose voices become one through the superimposition of different strata of sound recorded on the Rhône, which intermingle and respond to each other in a resonant, acousmatic space, where field recordings, specialized recordings and spoken word take place according to fluctuations in data (DATA) compiled and/or received in real time.
This recording work stems from an experimental quest to capture sound matter in a way that traditional sound recording methods cannot, and to translate normally inaudible elements into the realm of the audible. Using traditional processes but also experimental sensors (which have been part of artist Julie Rousse's preferred equipment for several years) such as hydrophones (underwater sounds), coil sensors, antennas (electromagnetic sphere), piezoelectric sensors (vibrations), accelerometers (displacement sensor), Julie Rousse has been sounding the Rhône since 2018 during explorations in the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur and Rhône-Alpes regions, then in Switzerland.

"From the tongue of ice of the Glacier and the mouth of the river comes to me this play on words around the mouth and the voice - from which I drew the initial title of the work A Voice runs through the Rhone and materializes my objective to give to hear the voice of this majestic and powerful river.

From the warning by scientists around the world about the disappearance of glaciers in 2100 comes the urgency that drives this project to give voice to a world still alive, to transmit to the public the desire to see these biotopes survive, the importance of the richness of the sound fields as markers of a world in decline.
