Creation residency

Polyomino is a non-interactive, multiphonic sound installation designed for two disjointed amplified spaces. Initiated in 2021, this proposal has its origins in a polyform geometric figure known as a polyomino. A polyomino is a set of small squares glued together according to assembly rules. These sets can contain an infinite number of these small squares. They have the advantage of being very easy to manipulate, enabling rapid appropriation of a wide variety of problems and combinations. In the duo's musical and compositional approach, polyominoes take the form of modules, made up of several elements. An element is a sound material with one or more associated categories (accidental, intentional, improvised...). Our research and writing focus mainly on the combinatorial domain. Can we find an assembly that satisfies certain constraints? How many possibilities are there? When can modules be said to be identical or different, to communicate or respond to each other? These combinations are approached in phases of musical play, based on different writing methods, either random - algorithms - or intentional - gesture. By extension, this work of juxtaposition questions the relationship between composer and listener. It establishes a different relationship to perception and listening, offering an intimate and singular experience. Starting from an approach outside any desire or need to be expected: an uncontrolled composition.

The various residencies at the GMEM gave Charles Bascou and Pierre Pulisciano the opportunity to take stock of the different sound materials produced by Respire Rachel, their electronic improvisation duo, and to research the possibilities of sorting, assembling and categorizing the elements they heard, from which the first scores emerged.
