Creation and recording residency.
As part of the Meyer Foundation's residency program for cultural and artistic development
"I'm naturally drawn to the sounds made by everyday objects. Whether it's sounds that dot our everyday environment, like the high-pitched hiss produced by a partially-closed Coca-Cola bottle or the rhythmic hum and glissandi of a washing machine; or whether it's more surprising sounds, like the strangely melodic warble of a piece of rubber tape scraping a bicycle handle in the wind, I've developed a keen ear for the subtle soundscapes that surround us. In 2019, I began collecting and recording these aural encounters, perceiving them not as mere background noise, but as expressions of the objects themselves, each possessing its own personality and voice.
The first exploration in the series follows a commission from Radio France for Anne Montaron's program Création Mondiale. The work focuses on a washing-machine dryer. Through a series of five musical moments, I seek to reveal the sounds that emanate from this appliance, some very present, others more subtle, almost unnoticed. These ordinary noises are transformed into a sound composition that highlights the hidden essence of this everyday object." - Megumi Okuda.
