Inspired by Philippe Descola's Beyond Nature and Culture, which describes the relationship between human communities and their environment, Topos populates a place with hidden sonic agents surrounding visitors.
Each of them repeats a short musical sequence that develops. Listening to each other and to us, the ensemble builds a great polyphony in the manner of animal populations in nature.
An alternative experience of attention to the sounds that surround us, Topos is an invitation to imagine micro-societies connected to their environments.
Born in 1960, Jean-Luc Hervé studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris with Gérard Grisey. He obtained a first prize in composition. His doctoral thesis in aesthetics as well as a research conducted at Ircam will be the occasion for a theoretical reflection on his work as a composer. His residency at the Villa Kujoyama in Kyoto is a decisive turning point in his work.
