GMEM is partnering with the Phonurgia Nova Awards for its 30th edition!
International Competition for Radio and Sound Creation

5 days of listening (3 days in Penvénan + 2 days in Marseille), 27 hours of creative work, 51 sound pieces that redefine the art of radio.

The Phonurgia Nova Awards are an observatory of emerging sound creation.

51 works will be presented in exceptional listening conditions: the works will be compared, discussed, and analyzed by those who champion them—composers, producers, programmers, essayists, and critics. The jury will deliberate in public and in the presence of the artists during a two-day listening marathon, after which it will award the prizes and creative residencies.

A Tribute to Yann Paranthoën

He needs no introduction. Even though he hasn’t been on the air for 25 years, his work lives on. Born in 1935 and deceased in 2005, Yann Paranthoën was a complete radio artist (recording, editing, and mixing his creations entirely on his own—which was extremely rare at the time). He produced an original body of work—truly unique in both form and subject matter—through which an autobiographical thread runs from piece to piece. He said: “I create an event and capture the sounds.” Or again: “Radio is comparable to painting.” He devoted his entire life to exploring the documentary vein of a demanding sound art form, which he wanted to make accessible to everyone. For cartoonist and writer Emmanuel Guibert, Yann Paranthoën is a “sound filmmaker.” For sound engineer and essayist Daniel Deshays, “he is neither a composer, nor an archivist, nor a sound effects artist, but probably all of those things at once.” In his programs, speech is a material to be sculpted, just like the sounds of life or moments of silence.

7:30 p.m. — 10:00 p.m.: Tribute to Yann Paranthoën

"Au fil du son dePilar Arcila " — A portrait film by Yann Paranthoën, produced by Mille et une films (54 min., Rennes, 2007).
Conceived by a photographer deeply moved by her encounter with Yann Paranthoën, this film takes us into the heart of the Breton sound designer’s creative process (and beyond…).
Born in Bogotá (Colombia), Pilar Arcila lives and works in Marseille. A 2001 graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles, she studied psychology in Colombia before turning her attention to photography and documentary film. In 2003, following her time at the ENSP—where Yann Paranthoën led a workshop on radio production—she began working on a visual project about the sound designer at the invitation of Marc Jacquin, head of the sound workshop. After directing a first short piece for ARTE’s *Métropolis* magazine, she embarked on the production of this more ambitious film, produced by the company Mille et Une Films in Rennes.

Ways and Means: Following in the Footsteps of Yann Paranthoën on Île Grande #1 — A short film by Pierre Jacquin, featuring the voices of photographers Michel Follourou and Marc Enguerand (subject to change, 10 min.)

A Look into Yann Paranthoën’s Archives: A Presentation on the Digitization Project for the Paranthoën Collection byBastien Lambert (20 min)

Postcard from Centuri
: The Experience — Listening to Corsican Tapes by Claude Giovannetti andYann Paranthoën, France Culture, dir. Gilles Mardirossian (20-minute excerpt broadcast).
A tribute program exploring the 111 Corsican audio tapes by Yann Paranthoën and Claude Giovannetti.
Preceded by an update fromBastien Lambert on the digitization of Yann Paranthoën’s sound archives, a project he is coordinating for Logelloù.
In April 2018, Bastien Lambert met with Claude Giovannetti, a radio producer and Yann Paranthoën’s partner. Together, they explored the magnetic tapes recorded by Yann Paranthoën between 1987 and 2004 in Cap Corse. A total of 111 magnetic tapes. These tapes are not only traces of life at Cap Corse but also reflect a unique approach to radio. Here, the focus is not on “covering a topic” but rather on exploring “radio expression” through impressions, intuitions, encounters, and chance.

Nagra IV-S 3328 Check-up— A film by Michel Follorou based on the book*Yann Paranthoën, l’art de la radio* (excerpt, 10 min.) Published by Phonurgia Nova.
Yann Paranthoën during the filming of his show “On Nagra, il enregistrera” at the Kudelski factories in Cheseaux, Switzerland.
Born in Perros-Guirec in 1946, Michel Follorou lives and works in Brittany as a photographer and filmmaker. Starting in 1985, his research on sound and soundscapes led him to work at France Culture’s audio control room (ACR). It was there that he met Yann Paranthoën and Claude Giovannetti. A friendship blossomed. A few years later, this friendship culminated in a joint trip to the birthplace of the Nagra, at the Kudelski factory in Cheseaux, Switzerland.

A Listening Room at the Museum — by Daniel Rouvier, director of the Réattu Museum in Arles (5 min.), discussing the museum’s sound art collection focused on “field recording,” its “Listening Room,” and its 2026–2027 program centered on the theme of wind, including, starting in October 2027, a section titled “Paranthoën in the Wind.”

Two mirror-image works that draw on the same sounds recorded by the Breton sound designer in the sculptor’s studio. Two creations, one for radio and the other musical:

"Portrait of Irène Zack " byYann Paranthoën — Original radio production (10 min.)

A Faceless Portrait of Composer Christian Zanési — A program featuring new musical works based on sounds by Yann Paranthoën (11 min.)
