It was under the pseudonym Rachilde that Marguerite Eymery, then aged twenty-four, published an erotic novel in 1884: Monsieur Vénus, which depicts a passionate relationship between an aristocrat with masculine behavior and a young man whom she reduces to the role of "mistress."
Rachilde offers a truly transgressive vision of socially established gender roles, which continues to surprise today. Without escaping the misogynistic connotations that characterize late 19th-century literature, this "queer before its time" novel has been adapted by three major artists from the music, dance, and theater scenes.
