Purpose of the residency: composition
After a three-year residency in the Hautes-Alpes, Christian Sebille presents Le chant des cimes, the fruit of a meticulous collection of sounds from this mountainous region. An ice hockey match, a stroll punctuated by the voice of Hervé Cortot, birdsong, the tinkling of chimes and bells... guided the composer's journey through the valleys of Champsaur and Valgaudemar.
Like the Romantic musicians, but armed with his computerized lutherie, the composer celebrates the living, inhabited mountain through an immersive sound fresco. He virtuosically paints a symphony that brings to life the landscape, the murmurs of rivers and the echoes of valleys, plunging the audience into the heart of an unparalleled musical journey.
The audience is invited to take its place at the heart of an orchestra of loudspeakers, also known as an acousmonium. Little by little, the first sounds emerge and unfold in space, subtle and unheard-of. A space of sound opens up and develops, a fiction of enveloping sounds. Listening without seeing: this is the suggestion of acousmatics, the intuition of Pierre Schaeffer, its illustrious discoverer.
The electroacoustic alpine poem will be premiered at the Festival Aujourd'hui Les Musiques de Chaillol on July 21, 2023.

Christian Sebille is a composer and artistic director of the GMEM in Marseille. He works on the realization of sound installations in situ, in particular within the framework of a series entitled Miniatures. The place of sound capture is linked to the place of its diffusion in a ratio of space compression (reduction of the diffusion space in relation to the capture space) and temporal reduction (ratio of capture time / diffusion time). Moreover, he works on the concrete sound and on the capacity of the material to be in itself its own diffuser (the instrumental object). The radiation of the material and the movement of the object (sound) play with each other.
