Writing residency.
In 2026, the Courroy-Wong duo continues a long-standing collaboration aimed at creating an organic connection between kaval flutes and electronic instruments.
With *Grains de temps*, the two artists are developing a new repertoire. The pieces intensify their exploration of fluidity between the ways they each manipulate the sound spectrum. Isabelle Courroy works directly with the sound material using her body. François Wong works on textures using his electronic tools.
This new creative project also involves an exploration of space, featuring an array of six speakers arranged in a circle, supplemented by smaller, more localized sound sources. The compositions incorporate spatialization and the speaker layout as fundamental elements from the very beginning of the composition process.
Grains de temps is also exploring the dialogue between electronic instruments and traditional acoustic flutes. The research focuses on the coherence of the materials, as well as on the ergonomics and fluidity of the interaction between two instrument families from culturally distinct traditions.
Isabelle Courroy
Composer, improviser
As the first female soloist on kaval flutes, Isabelle Courroy brings the traditions of Balkan and Anatolian pastoral flutes into the cutting edge of contemporary music. She explores the malleability of her sound material by combining the visceral energy of the breath with the open-end design of so-called “oblique” flutes. By crossing and bringing together genres and aesthetics, she opens up new avenues of creation.
A composer and improviser, she also commissions works and invents new instruments.
With L’Oreille Buissonnière – Musiques Obliques, which she founded in 2011, she initiates and brings together numerous projects, bringing the dynamics of the oblique into play.
Her career is international. Her discography has been recognized by the Académie Charles Cros, Les Victoires de la Musique, Diapason d’or, and Télérama’s ffff…
François Wong
Composer
François Wong explores sound in its vertical dimension (delving into the material) and in its temporal organization. He conceives pieces and installations for instruments or sound installations, guided primarily by the act of listening. His projects LEDJA (women’s voices in Palestine and Israel), Grains de temps(with Isabelle Courroy, kaval flutes), andFils de Son(walking and sound recording of the landscape) are the focus of regular writing residencies (GMEM, Muse en Circuit, GMEA…).
A baritone saxophonist, improvised music is also at the heart of his practice. He is active in the Grand8 ensemble, performs with various musicians and improvisers, and enjoys shifting the listening experience to unique performance venues.
Since 2019, he has been teaching electroacoustic composition at the Cité de la Musique in Marseille.
