The ancient concept of a harmonious "music of the spheres", impregnating the whole field of musical philosophy from Pythagoras to Kepler and Mersenne, has been completely renewed by the developments of modern astronomy: our universe is no longer the peaceful and unchanging place dreamed of by generations of scientists and artists, but on the contrary the arena of discordance and extremely violent arrhythmic phenomena.

The "real" music of the cosmos is the music of stellar vibrations, the clattering of pulsars or the thunder of black holes. Since the 1960s, a growing number of composers have become interested in astrophysical research and have incorporated their understanding of various models into their musical creations. Jean-Pierre Luminet, who has collaborated with leading composers such as Gérard Grisey (Le Noir de l'Étoile, 1990) and Hèctor Parra(Inscape, 2018), opens up this cross-fertilization between music and fundamental sciences.
