The pure moment, the ephemeral code. VOID.SESSIONS is a free, open community live-patching session organized by Structure Void. An evening of code improvisation with Max, starting from a blank page, with no safety net or backups, in full view of the audience.
VOID.SESSIONS is a project focused on collaboration and collective improvisation, inspired by the “Blank Pages” protocol from the 2010s. Organized by Structure Void, this free, open event—which requires reservations—brings together the community of artist-programmers around a radical approach to live patching with Max (Max/MSP) or Pure Data.
At a time when creative environments are saturated with pre-established structures and turnkey solutions, we often lose sight of the original malleability of code. VOID.SESSIONS offers a clean break from this digital comfort: the artist faced with a blank page, without a history or a safety net. The absence of a backup is not a constraint; it is a deliberate choice: that of radical impermanence. Nothing is prepared in advance; nothing is stored for later. All that remains is the raw act of programming, shared in real time with the other participants and the audience.
More than just a performance, it is an open-air laboratory. By revealing the internal architecture of the patches and opening up the listening experience beyond the circle of insiders, the programming process becomes an object of collective contemplation. Technique takes a back seat to dialogue, and these tools return to their primary function: that of a pure and unpredictable instrument of improvisation.
The protocol:
— Language: Max (Max/MSP) or Pure Data visual programming environments. • Time constraints: A session lasts exactly 60 minutes.
— Zero: Start from a blank programming page.
— Volatility: Saving or loading a file during the session is prohibited.
The audience experience: VOID.SESSIONS is a transparent environment. The audience is invited to inhabit the space, listen to the evolving soundscape, and observe the participants’ screens to understand the logic behind its real-time construction.
Partnership: Structure Void, a Qualiopi-certified training organization and Ableton Certified Training Center, founded and directed by Julien Bayle.
