This concert brings together seven distinctive voices in contemporary music from North and South America, showcasing a diversity of voices and aesthetics, as well as a shared passion for sonic experimentation and the exploration of instrumental techniques.
In the background, an artistic approach emerges that is deeply rooted in the concerns of our time—whether political, environmental, or societal—serving as a common thread that transcends borders.
For one evening, *Voces de America* bringstogether the vibrant music of Zosha di Castri, the rhythm and inventiveness of Hugo Morales Murguía, and the sonic imagination of Alec Hall—all of which will contrast with the fragile world of Natalia Valencia and the lyricism of Rodrigo Lima—as well as with the voices featured in the two world premieres: those of Canadian composer Émilie Girard-Charest and Colombian composer Daniel Alvarado Bonilla.

Hugo Morales Murguía
Composer
At the intersection of traditional instruments, found objects, performance techniques, and technologies, the development of alternative forms of sound generation for musical composition is central to his artistic approach. Hugo Morales Murguía is interested in viewing traditional instruments as cultural artifacts and in inventing instrumental applications for rudimentary objects; the musician is seen as a versatile multi-instrumentalist, a musical performer in his own right.
After completing his studies at the Center for Research and Musical Studies (CIEM) in Mexico City, he moved to the Netherlands to pursue graduate studies with support from the Netherlands Organization for International Cooperation in Higher Education (Nuffic), the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA), the Prince Bernhard Cultural Fund, and the Podiumkunsten Fund. He holds a master’s degree in musical composition from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, a master’s degree in sonology (with high honors) from the Institute of Sonology in The Hague, and a Ph.D. from the Center for Contemporary Music Practice (CCMP) at Brunel University London. His music has been recognized by organizations and competitions such as: the Mexican Music Council (2003), the Jurgenson International Competition (2007, UK), the Gaudeamus International Music Week (2008, NL), the SPNM Shortlist (2008–11, UK), the International Forum of New Music (2010, MX), Podiumkunsten Fund Composition Grant 2013–14 (NL), “Grand Prix” at the Tokyo Experimental Festival 2013 (JP), Ibermúsicas 2017 (ES), Fellow at the Akademie Schloss Solitude 2015–17 (DE), and the Willem Pijper Prize 2017 (NL). His works have been performed and commissioned by ensembles such as: The Arditti Quartet (United Kingdom), L’Ensemble Intercontemporain (France), Tal ea Ensemble (United States), Slagwerk Den Haag (Netherlands), Trio G·man (Denmark), Studio for New Music Ensemble (Russia), Vortex Ensemble (Switzerland), the London Contemporary Orchestra (United Kingdom), The Black Page Orchestra (Austria), the Ensemble for New Music Tallinn (Estonia), and many others... Alec Hall

Born in Toronto in 1985, Alec Hall lives and works in New York as an independent composer. His music explores the nature of acoustic materials within the post-avant-garde musical landscape. Through samples, field recordings, and other representative sound elements, Hall addresses—both conceptually and aesthetically—important non-musical subjects, such as working conditions in China, environmental destruction in Canada, state violence and civil disobedience in the United States, the Internet, animal cognition, (mis)well-being, and many others. The result is a rich body of work that transcends traditional boundaries, comprising instrumental and vocal pieces with or without electronics, orchestral compositions, experimental operas, architectural installations, kinetic installations, and intermedia works. His works have been performed by the Bozzini Quartet, the Ensemble Intercontemporain, the Ensemble Dal Niente, the Ensemble Proton Bern, the Ensemble SurPlus, the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra, the JACK Quartet, ICE, Talea, Either / OR, TAK, Wet Ink, Continuum, Ekmeles, Schallfeld, the Mivos Quartet, and by soloists such as Patrick Higgins, Séverine Ballon, and Stéphane Ginsburgh. Mathieu Romano
Conductor, L'Itinéraire
Mathieu Romano places expressiveness and shared experience at the heart of his conducting: uniting the musicians in a shared emotional experience to better convey it to the audience.
Informed by historical research yet focused on a vibrant and intense interpretation, his approach consistently highlights the meaning and emotional power of the musical texts.
He works equally well with vocalists as he does with orchestras. This versatility, his intimate knowledge of the voice, along with the clarity of his gestures and his attentiveness, allow him to be just as at home on stage as he is in the opera pit.
As an artist perpetually seeking new experiences, his repertoire ranges from Baroque music to contemporary works. He also regularly takes on cross-disciplinary projects: real-time electronic music, film concerts, musical theater, site-specific performances…
In recent seasons, he has collaborated with orchestras and ensembles such as Les Siècles, the Orchestre de Chambre de Paris, L’itinéraire, the Lille National Orchestra, the Yellow Socks Orchestra, the Pays de la Loire National Orchestra, the Genoa Opera Orchestra, the Republican Guard Symphony Orchestra, Les Frivolités Parisiennes, the Radio France Choir, the RIAS Kammerchor, and the Netherlands Chamber Choir. In the field of opera, he has conducted, among other works, *Breaking the Waves* (Mazzoli) at the Opéra Comique, *Don Giovanni* (Mozart) at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées, and this season is conducting *Orphée aux enfers* (Offenbach) at the CNSMD in Paris and *L’Arche de Noé* (Britten) at the Atelier Lyrique in Tourcoing with Les Siècles. His curiosity has also led him to projects such as *Harry Potter 5* and *7* (a film-concert tour in France and Rome), several productions with L’Itinéraire, and a national tour featuring masterpieces of a cappella choral music with his ensemble, Aedes. With this ensemble, of which he is the founder and artistic director, he performs in the most prestigious music seasons. This ensemble and its rich discography have been acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. For his achievements as an artist, he was named a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters in 2020.
