Having created numerous works for their own ensemble, the two musicians of the Avès duo are now broadening their horizons by combining the piano-accordion duo with vocals. For this project, they have invited countertenor Virgile Pellerin to join them in their exploration of chamber music as a means of examining relationships: coexistence, opposition, otherness, and fusion.
By exploring the diverse instrumental combinations made possible by this unconventional trio, the program presented as part of the Modulations series showcases the next generation of composers.
The commission by the GMEM to the Greek-Armenian composer Filippos Sakagian creates a sensitive listening space in which perception becomes blurred. The concept of vocality, central to the work, permeates the instrumental writing. The use of electronics reinforces this relationship to create a new sonic identity.
This concert also highlights the Avès duo’s collaborations with composers Samir Amarouch and Matteo Gualandi. Through their respective musical languages, each of them explores a different aspect of the relationship between the piano and the accordion.
The rest of the program is designed to give countertenor Virgile Pellerin free rein. His performative approach to vocal artistry and his interest in hybrid forms make him a key figure on the contemporary music scene.

Avès Duo
piano and accordion duo
Pianist Elena Soussi and accordionist Ambre Vuillermoz formed the Avès duo in 2017. Each with a diverse and prolific concert career, they come together as a duo to explore the possibilities of their unusual combination. This “false twin” duo—two keyboard instruments, one wind and the other percussion—leads them to delve deeper into timbre and composition alongside various composers. They have initiated several commissions (Claire-Mélanie Sinnhuber, Tobias Feierabend, Samir Amarouch, Matteo Gualandi, Julien Malaussena, Filippos Sakagian) to enrich their ensemble’s repertoire. Their collaborations are always driven by a proactive and committed approach to the creative process. In this way, they strive to help composers showcase their musical language through the piano-accordion duo.
Virgile Pellerin
singer and improvisational vocalist
Virgile Pellerin is an opera singer and improvisational vocalist. A countertenor, he initially specialized in early music, and his love for acting and the stage led him toward opera: he performed the Sorceress (_Dido & Æneas_, Purcell, conducted by Leonardo García-Alarcón in 2023) and Ottone (_L’Incoronazione di Poppea_, Monteverdi, directed by Patrice Caurier and Moshe Leiser in 2026). Virgile is a graduate of the CNSMD in Paris in opera singing and generative improvisation. He is a laureate of the Safran Foundation, the Académie Voix Nouvelles de Royaumont, and the Ircam’s Académie ManiFeste 2023. Passionate about contemporary music, Virgile regularly collaborates with composers, including Samir Amarouch (_Horizons_, 2023) and Nicola Sani (_Code Unknown II_, 2026). As an actor, Virgile has distinguished himself in theater and works with directors Aurelia Ivan and Maëlle Dequiedt (_The Democracy Project_, 2025). In 2024, Virgile founded _Quiebros_ with harpsichordist Darío Cervera, an ensemble playing period instruments dedicated to the early music repertoire and contemporary music, in residence at the Singer-Polignac Foundation. In 2025, he founded _Brûle_ with oboist Ariane Bacquet: a company for experimental music, a laboratory where contemporary music, free improvisation, and performance converge.
Fillipos Sakagian
composer, director, and transmedia artist
Filippos Sakagian is a composer, director, and transmedia artist. He creates works that blend instrumental composition, electronic devices, stage writing, and installation. His work lies at the intersection of concert, experimental theater, and somatic performance, exploring the thresholds of perception where sound, light, space, and the body generate experiences of visceral intensity. A graduate of the Master’s program in instrumental composition and new technologies at the CNSMD in Paris and a former student of the IRCAM curriculum, he designs his own instruments and digital tools in Max/MSP, organically integrating light and the spatialization of sound into musical composition. This research-creation approach is part of a theoretical reflection on compositional practice and real-time performance systems, leading to lectures and publications. His works have been presented at IRCAM, the Greek National Opera, the NFM (Wrocław), the Musée de l’Orangerie, as well as at the TONARIUM (Poland), GRAME Biennale (Lyon), Intonal (Sweden), MIXTUR (Barcelona), and TIEMF (Tehran) festivals. A recipient of the SACEM Composition Prize, the Mixage Fou Prize, and the Hertzbreakerz Prize for Electroacoustic Composition, his work has received support from the Meyer Foundation, SACEM, the Legs Jabès grant, and the Tarrazi Fund.
