It was in 2022, as part of the European project Musical Bounce Back - dedicated to promoting the place of women in music, and more specifically women composers - that I initiated the creation of TRIO AND CO, entirely devoted to their works.
During my travels to Cyprus, Greece, Portugal, France and as far afield as Armenia, I discovered many talented women composers. This journey inspired me to come up with the idea of a recording, to bring to light these too-often forgotten voices, and to pass on this rich musical heritage.
Musical Bounce Back is about bouncing back on history, not to erase it, but to inscribe women's music in our collective memory.

Originating in the 17th century, the trio sonata is written for three voices, two dessus (two melodic voices) and a basso continuo. Exploring different instrumental configurations, it became one of the most important forms for Baroque composers (Legrenzi, Corelli, Bach, Purcell, etc.). In the Classical period, with Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven, the formation became more precise in terms of movements and structure, and became particularly popular in the ensemble of violin, cello and piano.
During the Romantic period, and right up to the present day, it has continued to develop and diversify, constituting one of the jewels in the crown of chamber music.
This CD, dedicated to female figures, features the 2nd Trio in A minor (Op. 34) by Cécile Chaminade (1857-1944). In her wake, five female composers take up the trio sonata format, inscribing it in their own worlds and breathing new life into it. What the pieces have in common is the choice of a text, a word, a title or expressive indications that underlie or suggest a program, a narrative, a teleological thought, thus inducing the structure and form of the pieces, the dialogue between the three instruments and their modes of play. Finally, the trio configuration provides a solid foundation for all kinds of sonic and acoustic experimentation.
Geneviève MATHON - Professor Emeritus of Musicology, Gustave Eiffel University
Hélène Maréchaux
After graduating from the CNSM in Paris, she joined the Symphonie orchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Then, attracted by small ensembles, she joined the Munich Chamber Orchestra. She has performed with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Philippe Herreweghe's Orchestre des Champs-Elysées and the baroque ensembles Hofkappelle München and Arcangelo. Marine Rodallec
Marine Rodallec is a long-term partner in PIANO AND CO projects.
She is a member of the ensemble C Barré and teaches at the CRR de Marseille.
An eclectic cellist, Marine Rodallec enjoys expressing herself through a variety of musical languages. Unlimited by era and style, and driven by insatiable curiosity, the search for "expressivity" through sound has always been and remains her "leitmotiv".
Jean Sugitani
A member of Les Siècles orchestra, Jean-Hisanori Sugitani studied piano at the CNSM in Paris, where he won several Premier Prix before perfecting his chamber music skills. Winner of international competitions, he has collaborated with such luminaries as Krystof Penderecki, Pierre Boulez and Nicolas Bacri. He has premiered works by Guillaume Connesson, Karol Beffa, Richard Dubugnon...
Rémi Durupt
First prize at the "Giancarlo Facchinetti" International Conducting Competition in Brescia in 2018 and at the "Antal Dorati" International Competition in Budapest in 2021, Rémi Durupt (conductor sponsored by the Peter Eötvös Foundation and Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne), has made a name for himself through his mastery of diverse musical expressions, from interpretation of the classical repertoire to contemporary creation, not forgetting electronic music and free improvisation, constantly questioning the link between works, different eras and present audiences. In France and abroad, he conducts contemporary ensembles such as Sillages, Linéa, Lucilin, Tempus Konnex, Dedalo, UMZE, Impronta, Ars Nova and Links, which he co-founded.
Nathalie Négro
A classical pianist, Nathalie Négro soon turned her attention to contemporary music and creation.
Favoring encounters between musicians of different aesthetics and cultures, she likes to break down barriers between genres. Her musical commitments include the visibility of women in music, the democratization of access to contemporary music and support for the younger generation, all of which she also supports through European projects.
PIANO AND CO
was founded in 2003 by pianist Nathalie NÉGRO. In 2021, PIANO AND CO will be the first musical company in the PACA region to be directed by a woman, under the auspices of the French Ministry of Culture.
Contemporary creation is the artistic axis around which all the company's activities revolve: creation, transmission, dissemination, research and innovation. The company has extended its activities to include mentoring and support for young artists' projects. PIANO AND CO contributes to the valorization of contemporary repertoire as much as to the renewal of its artistic expression, notably by crossing fields as diverse as digital, visual arts, ancient or traditional music, urban poetry... Raising awareness and developing audiences for contemporary music through projects that bring together amateurs and professionals are among the company's main objectives. Artistic Director Nathalie NÉGRO has a long-standing experience of artistic and cultural initiatives, whether in schools or universities, with social, medical or prison groups, for adults, students or priority audiences. In terms of distribution, the company's creations are regularly performed on the national live performance network, and are on the program of numerous national stages.
In recent years, the structure has been piloting multi-partner European projects based on contemporary music, in the form of schemes that systematically include creation, research and dissemination. In 2017, PIANO AND CO conceived Europe In C, supported by Erasmus +. Built around the work of Terry RILEY, this project involved conservatories, universities and research centers in Italy, Greece, Germany, Belgium and France. Recently, PIANO AND CO developed Musical Bounce Back, with the aim of promoting women in music. In 2023, Musical Bounce Back was awarded the "UN Women France/Génération Égalité" label for all its Europe-wide dissemination work. PIANO AND CO is currently piloting Mind the gap , a new European project that will involve 9 female composers in creating a musical exquisite corpse, and will raise awareness in the professional world and the media of the issue of visibility for female composers. As the only structure in France equipped with the LoLa (Low Latency) high-speed digital transmission system, PIANO AND CO is encouraging its various international partners to use this tool, which enables rehearsals and performances to be carried out remotely with no latency.
