Micrographia is an expanded four-hand piano duo, a form of sound mapping conceived by pianists Alvise Sinivia and Frédéric Blondy, inspired by *Terra Forma: Manual of Potential Cartographies* by Frédérique Aït-Touati, Alexandra Arènes, and Axelle Grégoire.
While in its “classical” form, the four-hand piano piece is limited to the piano’s keyboard, this piece expands the scope of exploration to the entire grand piano, treated as a territory to be explored.
On stage, two pianist-cartographers, Frédérique Blondy and Alvise Sinivia, and a grand piano surrounded by microphones, each connected to a speaker. Manipulated live by the musicians like cameras, these microphones allow for a multiplication of sonic perspectives by creating zoom effects, focusing, highlighting, and accentuating the texture of certain details and materials, playing with scale, and shifting and inverting the piano’s acoustic space.
Creating an immersive and dynamic experience and guided by the concept of shifting perspectives, the performers engage with the instrument as a whole, fully integrating body and instrument. Through preparations, internal playing, and extended techniques, they produce a rich and varied soundscape.
Micrographia is structured as a series of cartographies explored through various lenses—depths, perspectives, movements, peripheries, pulsations, and voids—tracking the performers’ movements and gestures across this expanded sonic space.

Alvise Sinivia is a pianist and graduate of the CNSMD in Paris. His musical practice lies at the intersection of contemporary music, improvisation, and multidisciplinary creation. As a co-founder of the WARN!NG collective, he established his own company following his residency at the Villa Medici in 2017, where he furthered his research into the connections between sound, movement, and space. He also composes for film, live performance, and documentary.
Frédéric Blondy
pianist
After studying science, Frédéric Blondy turned his attention to contemporary, experimental, and improvised music. He has collaborated with numerous international artists (Joëlle Léandre, John Tilbury, Otomo Yoshihide, and others) and composes works ranging from solo pieces to orchestral works. In 2021, he premiered an opera for the Lille Opera. A resident at Villa Kujoyama in 2017, he founded Onceim in 2011, an orchestra dedicated to the collective exploration of sonic possibilities.
