Beirut Birds (طيور بيروت) is a sound capsule that pays homage to Lebanon's (inter)personal narratives of migration, displacement and cyclical turbulence. Transforming her multi-year project, multidisciplinary artist and composer Nour Sokhon crystallizes the performance Beirut Birds (طيور بيروت) into her long-awaited debut album.
Presented and performed live, it is accompanied by juxtaposed images of urban life in the Lebanese capital and avian migration across the Mediterranean Sea, representing themes strongly rooted in the music.
In her varied artistic process, Nour has conducted and recorded interviews with diasporas and returnees in order to commemorate, share, heal and imagine. These sources become the central elements of the album, looping, recounting and returning over time, with Nour responding with her instruments and voice. In dialogue with the interviewees, creating quasi-mantras, Nour brings together these soundscapes deeply rooted in matter, including field recordings she collected between 2018 and 2021 in Lebanon and during her subsequent move to Berlin.
The composition incorporates manipulated sounds from objects symbolizing migration, such as office doorbells, a luggage wheel, car parts and administrative documents. Musically, the songs are enriched by Nour's improvisations on classical piano, electronics, synthesizers, violin and various percussion instruments. As time is sculpted and layers blurred, words become spectres, while an entropic orchestra of percussion and melody rises up, shaping an in-between space for those who left and stayed.
