A process of sound refinement...
"Since my arrival in Marseille, the industrial areas of the Etang de Berre have fascinated me. I have, on many occasions, wandered between the fascinating spaces of the refineries, walked on the banks of the lakes and ponds, listened to the towns and villages between fresh and salt water." - Christian Sebille
The refining of oil designates the whole of the treatments and transformations aiming at drawing from oil the maximum of products with high commercial value. The refining of Oil designates the whole of the treatments and transformations aiming at drawing from the territory of the Etang de Berre the maximum of sounds with high poetic value .
For two years, Christian Sebille has been gathering experiences and encounters in the area around the Etang de Berre. Listening to the sound identity of the industrial and human landscapes he has crossed, he has created a sound palette.
Interviews with inhabitants, workers, fishermen or walkers, sound recordings of the ports or refineries, landscapes and beaches, all come together in a vast collection of sounds, the raw material for future compositions and concerts.
This first sound leafing is completed by the one elaborated by the students of the Technical High School Jean-Moulin of Port de Bouc, of the Conservatories of Martigues and Vitrolles within workshops of recording, electroacoustic improvisation and composition.
This creative process is again enriched at a third level by performative collaborations between young amateurs and professional artists: Philippe Foch, percussionist and virtuoso improviser, the YIN Ensemble under the direction of Philippe Festou...
The Pétrole concerts are played in situ in improbable places: body shops, airfields, beaches...
This artistic creation of territory gathers according to workshops, performances and concerts outside the walls, a multitude of partners: professional high school, Conservatories of Martigues and Vitrolles, the Yin Ensemble, the Bureau des Guides, the ENSA-M, Radio Grenouille...

Christian Sebille is a composer and artistic director of the GMEM in Marseille. He works on the realization of sound installations in situ, in particular within the framework of a series entitled Miniatures. The place of sound capture is linked to the place of its diffusion in a ratio of space compression (reduction of the diffusion space in relation to the capture space) and temporal reduction (ratio of capture time / diffusion time). Moreover, he works on the concrete sound and on the capacity of the material to be in itself its own diffuser (the instrumental object). The radiation of the material and the movement of the object (sound) play with each other.
