creation

In the heart of the Palais des Arts, home to the Pierre Barbizet Conservatory, a set of 19th century Boisselot pianos is set in resonance by an electroacoustic device. The prestigious piano manufacturer from Marseille, which disappeared at the beginning of the last century, contributed to the evolution of the instrument by developing, as early as 1843, the "piano with sustained sounds at will" thanks to the invention of the sostenuto pedal.

Here, a dedicated computer program controls live feedback between microphones and speakers. The keyboard covers remain closed while the piano lids are lifted and the forte pedals held down to free the strings from the dampers and let them vibrate in sympathy.

Relaying the resonances of the instruments, artificial reverberation and granular synthesis algorithms extend the sounds captured by the microphones. The installation generates drones in harmonic tension with the space and whose fluctuations accompany the sound events of the place which are prolonged, stretched in time and left in suspense in the architectural volume of the Magaud room, open to the survey of the public.
