Building on the discussions and proposals put forward by La Coopérative — Réseau pour la création musicale DRAC PACA, several organizations active in the region are coming together to launch a second phase of OCCURRENCE, a project aimed at supporting and guiding artists and projects that tour the region and engage with local residents. The group of partners currently involved in this project includes an opera company, two national theaters, a SCIN, a theater, and a state-subsidized company. This diversity of participants is a major asset and aligns perfectly with the mission of La Coopérative.
Following on from the first version of the project (OCCURRENCE), the partners aim to support composer Elisabeth Angot and the musicians of her Ensemble 44—Olivia Leblanc (clarinet) and Rafael Cumont-Vioque (cello)—through a commission for choir and a program of events and performances featuring contemporary works. This project is driven by a desire to reconnect audiences with our music by expanding the range of venues and formats.
The main goal of this project is to facilitate direct connections between artists and various art forms and diverse audiences through outreach, engagement, and initiatives focused on production and dissemination.
We hope to work on producing, staging, and presenting a premiere concert featuring a small ensemble and an amateur choir. The choral piece will be the centerpiece of the premiere concert’s program, but the concert will also feature performances of various other works by the composer. The dialogue and collaboration among the members of the amateur choirs, the composer, and the musicians form the foundation of the artistic vision we aim to achieve.
Composer's Notes
It is with great pleasure that I envision this new composition, in collaboration with several amateur choirs from the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, accompanied and supported by the cello and the bass clarinet. These two instruments, with their shared range and closely related timbres, blend and intertwine almost imperceptibly, appearing as a natural extension of the human voice. Ultimately, the choir is an instrument that is both subtle and monolithic, where each individual’s uniqueness blends into a shared sound and breath without losing any of its essence.
This project inspires me not only because of its deeply human dimension, but also because of its great versatility: it can be performed anywhere and offers a simple, intuitive way to make music together. I’m also very happy that this project is part of a collaboration with my friends from Ensemble 44, Olivia Leblanc, and Rafael Cumont-Vioque. This creation thus continues our commitment to developing new musical forms in our region, in complete alignment with our mission: to share contemporary music everywhere and with as many people as possible.
