The "Alpages" research and creation cycle, following more than two years of residency in the Champsaur-Valgaudemar region (Hautes-Alpes): a mixed acousmatic piece, accompanied by an audio documentary serving as an ethnographic supplement to the musical work.
Alpages is an ethno-artistic creative project launched in 2024, based on immersion in a specific region and field recordings. Sheep herding in the Champsaur-Valgaudemar valleys serves as its primary inspiration for a work dedicated to pastoral mountain landscapes.
The resulting musical work is a mixed acousmatic piece titled *Et le souffle régulier de nos respirations * (* And the Steady Rhyth m of Our Breaths* ), accompanied by an audio documentary, *Quartiers d’août*, which serves as an ethnographic supplement to the musical composition. It is designed to be performed in various regions and is intended for audiences of all kinds.
This phase of research and creation is part of an effort to raise awareness and offer a poetic interpretation of issues related to pastoral life in the mountains, through a bold artistic approach that also aims to make our music accessible to everyone.
This project also provides an opportunity to engage in a deep reflection on creative processes directly linked to the natural world, as well as the ecological impact of our practices, which are designed to be performed in natural settings. For this project, our team has partnered with specialist Olivier Pichard (CEREMA laboratory).
Andthe Steady Rhythm of Our Breaths
Weather-Sensitive Concert
And the Steady Rhythm of Our Breaths is a multiphonic concert for a pastoral setting featuring a sound installation, two musicians, a shepherd and his dogs, a flock, and all the vagaries of the mountains. This unique piece is a subtle blend of electroacoustics, landscape, advanced technology, and rustic simplicity. It also draws inspiration from the region’s traditional oral music. It engages in a dialogue with the living world, shaped by the day’s atmospheric conditions.
We wish to share a moment suspended in time, spent in listening—a concrete reverie, a delicate moment accessible to everyone. And the steady rhythm of our breaths is an ode to the mountains, to their teeming life, to their boundless grandeur, and above all to all the beings that inhabit them.

Iris Kaufmann
artist and ethnologist
Composer, performer and ethnologist, founder of the FeM company and co-director of the DRALHAS ciné-concert, co-produced by FeM & L'Excentrale, she has been working since 2018 on the use of bells in agro-pastoralism. As part of the BATALH! group, she is also collaborating on the invention of a new instrument, the campanophone, a device armed with bells and rattles. Since 2021, she has directed a multi-restitution research and creation cycle, "Faiseurs de Paysages", focusing on the analysis of sound composition practices used in transhumant pastoralism. She is currently working on a performance, "Beau Bruit", combining research report, ethnographic narrative and sound creation, alongside commissions for sound creations at the crossroads of ethnology, radio and electroacoustic composition.
