Based on the paintings of the painter-composer Patricio Villarroel
In the framework of a partnership between the GMEM and the IESM, the 2nd year students of the Institut d'Enseignement Supérieur de la Musique Europe et Méditerranée, competing for the State diploma of music teacher, and the composer Alex Grillo, present a restitution of their improvisation workshop which explores the relationships between fixed image and improvised sounds.
"We called upon the painter-composer Patricio Villarroel who proposed a series of paintings considered and sometimes conceived as graphic scores (considering that a graphic score is a composition in which the musical improvisation is the ideal vector to question the place that the eye leaves to the ear, in this relation of round trip between listening and looking). A painting, whether figurative or abstract, remains a set of fixed signs that potentially suggest codes or "rules of play". But these codes have not been imagined by the painter (he has not notified any instructions for the painting), it is the musicians who determine them... while seeking the best means, through improvisation, to detach themselves from them in order to move towards the indeterminate" - Alex Grillo

Alex Grillo collaborates with musicians of jazz, traditional music or innovative music, written or improvised, crossing with dancers, actors, visual artists, scientists, poets. He creates "poetic cabaret" forms mixing texts and sounds, on themes such as "Loss", "Navigation", "The Desert", "Exoticism", others more marathon like "Love all night long" with the street arts company Ilotopie. Poetry and narration are naturally associated with his work of "putting words into sounds", he develops projects and creations with French-speaking writers and poets, in particular Nimrod, Biga, Raharimanana or his last creation Su e Ju, based on the Friulian poems of Pier Paolo Pasolini.
He teaches free improvisation and composes for instrumental ensembles, fixed sounds, choirs, choreographies, musical theater, visual arts, radio creation workshops, children's books/discs, events for the public space, educational pieces and Javanese gamelan.
