On the occasion of the exceptional visit to France of two Balinese artists invited by the Indonesian Embassy, the Gamelan Bintang Tiga ensemble immerses itself in Bali's Topeng, theatrical mask dance.
To serve music and dance in live interaction, the musicians train their eyes, and the dancers train their ears.
With an epic narrative adapted to the here and now, the traditional Balinese creative space is a vehicle for culture, education and philosophy. Teacher training and artistic residency: two dimensions of an action, culminating in a performance on Sunday April 30 at 5:00 pm at l'Embobineuse.
During this residency, the ensemble will work on the Balinese Topeng repertoire in its traditional form, through oral and collective transmission and presentation. Tradition knows no plays: the traditional codes of dance-music-action interaction and knowledge of the styles of dramatic character archetypes enable not only staging, but also live creation, always adaptable and always renewed.
Thanks to this system, in Bali, dance theater or puppet theater performances are given without prior rehearsal. The experiment was carried out with great success at the Indonesian Embassy in Paris, ending with Panji - Kuda Narawangsa, a narrative show (Arja dance opera, mask dances and shadow theater combined), by 35 musicians and dancers from the workshop, including several members of Bintang Tiga from Marseille.
Gamelan Bintang Tiga
ensemble
Gamelan Bintang Tiga was born of Faust and Rangda, the East/West encounter between Georges Aperghis, Trio Le Cercle and the Balinese musicians of Sabe in 1986. Under the impetus of Gaston Sylvestre and Raphaël De Vivo, this artistic ensemble continues its adventure, embracing contemporary music and the music and dance of Bali. This transmission residency punctuates the 2017 jubilee of the ensemble's double anniversary in Marseille, France and Europe: 30 years, arrival from Indonesia for three performances in Marseille (cour de la Vieille Charité), before the Avignon Festival, European tour and Parisian stay; 10 years, installation in Marseille and first performance in 2007 at the invitation of the GMEM.
