Julien and Claire operate at the intersection of techno, noise, and sound art. Their music traces a shifting line between free-flowing beats and sonic ruptures. A fragile, tense dance, suspended between brilliance and fading. Their meeting during a residency at Instants Chavirés in 2024 marked the beginning of an artistic collaboration, which has since developed through several concerts in France, Switzerland, and Belgium.
Comprising two solos and a duet, Julien Claire drawsthe audience into an intimate, immersive, and physical trance.
Terrine, aka Claire Gapenne, creates radical and spontaneous electronic music that straddles the line between abrasive no-techno and surgical noise.
For his part, Julien Desprez reimagines the guitar through a constellation of internal and external modifications that radically transform its use. In a total physical commitment, the effects pedals become a veritable dance floor, stamped by electrified tap shoes. Voice, electricity, rhythm, contrasts, tenderness, and fury collide to bring forth a sonic world that is at once raw, sensitive, and intensely emotional.

After a year of self-taught guitar lessons, pursued alongside his studies in cabinetmaking, Julien Desprez trained for four years at the École Nationale de Musique et de Danse de Yerres, then continued his studies for two years at the Conservatoire de Montreuil.
While jazz and rock were his initial influences, he quickly turned toward more open musical forms, free from aesthetic constraints and placing improvisation at the center. His relationship with the instrument, music, and space was profoundly transformed as a result. The guitar ceases to be a mere melodic tool and becomes an extended drum kit, a sound organ, a modular device that can be adapted and deployed according to the situation.
His encounter with Grégory Edelein plays a decisive role. It opens up a field of reflection and practice centered on the musician’s body, now fully engaged in the act of playing. This work places the body at the heart of each of his performances.
At the intersection of sound art, performance, and contemporary improvised music, Julien Desprez’s work today explores the relationships between body, space, and light on the stage, while maintaining sound as the central axis. His performances, situated halfway between choreography—without being danced—set design, and concert, shift the musician’s position: he is no longer merely a producer of sound, but a full-fledged physical performer.
From this approach emerge hybrid artistic forms, fostering permeability between disciplines. His recent creations are part of this dynamic: Coco exploresthe boundaries between sound and choreographic practices by playing with identities, whileAcapulco Redux developsa musical form capable of accommodating and bringing together sounds from all fields and aesthetics.
At the same time, Julien Desprez is a co-founder of Collectif Coax, a Paris-based musicians’ cooperative founded in 2008. — juliendesprez.com
