Writing residency (first phase)
-
Lady Fenice is a project for a musical stage piece, an "augmented monodrama" for singer, instrumental ensemble and electronic device, whose creation is envisaged for 2025.At the center of this piece, the character of Lady Fenice, a world-famous singer, very freely inspired by a few figures, recent or already historical, such as Madonna, Nina Hagen or Josephine Baker, renowned for their talent but also for having crystallized, at a moment of crisis, the emotion of an era. From the very beginning, the piece surprises Lady Fenice in her dressing room, a few minutes before entering the stage where an already overexcited audience awaits her. She would never leave this dressing room. Lady Fenice refuses to appear on stage and her public refusal triggers a wave of reactions from all over the world, mediated by the social network. In the age of instant messaging, public gossip is no longer a simple ancient choir, but an immaterial oratorio, whose harmony is difficult to perceive.
From the point of view of musical genre, Lady Fenice will be halfway between melodrama (text "set" to music) and sung-spoken monodrama (text "woven" into the music). The vocal color will borrow as much from the domain of pop (belting, use of the microphone or megaphone) as from that of Schönberg's Sprechgesang. The aim of this writing residency will be to define the vocality of the piece.
