Les Métamorphoses is the first work composed for the metallophone, a percussion instrument measuring fifteen meters in circumference, and premiered in the Auditorium de Radio France. Its microtonal tuning to 1/12th of a tone gives it the ability to produce organic, even hypnotic sounds acoustically.

Six percussionists set the 216 steel blades of the circular keyboard in resonance, making the notes between the notes heard. In a gestural, immersive and sonorous ballet imagined by composer Bastien David, in praise of sensitivity and collective intelligence, the insects plunge us into the iridescent world of tiny sound through their virtuoso playing of the Metallophone. This new musical instrument becomes the stage for a world in motion imagined by composer Bastien David.

"The idea for the Circular Metallophone was born during a trip to Myanmar. It was in Mandalay, the country's artisanal and cultural capital, that I worked with the traditional organ builder Ko Aung Moe on the manufacture and tuning of the 216 hammered steel blades. The six lacquered wooden resonance boxes were then made in France, before being finalized in Italy during my residency at the Villa Médicis - Académie de France in Rome." Bastien David
